I Have Mold in My Rental Unit

Frequently Asked Question: I have mold in my home and my landlord isn’t fixing it. What can I do?

Answer: You have rights. Your landlord must make repairs and do whatever is necessary to put and keep the rental in a fit and habitable condition. If your landlord does not make necessary repairs, you have options. You may be able to move out, or sue the landlord.

These are the steps you can take:
1. Communicate with your landlord about the needed repairs
2. Give the landlord a written request (we have a free form you can use)
3. Give your landlord time (3 –14 days) to make repairs
4. Consider your options. We have them outlined in our article 4 Steps to Take if Your Landlord Won’t Make Repairs, Including Mold. Important: If you do not follow the correct steps, you could get yourself into trouble. Please read our full article.
